Marble has a unique composition that is distinctly different than granite. Marble is a metamorphic crystalline rock originating from coral reefs beneath the ancient sea, which were buried under earth and rock over millions of years. Calcium rich bones of reef inhabiting sea creatures dissolved into calcium carbonate or limestone, which were further buried beneath the earth’s surface under tremendous heat and pressure over time.
Like most granite, marble can be highly polished however, it tends to lose its luster after years of exposure to water and natural acids. Unlike granite, marble is relatively soft which means it is easily scratched. Most marble is more porous than granite, which means it is more susceptible to staining if not properly sealed and maintained. For these reasons, marble is not recommended for kitchen countertops.
Marble is noted for its beautiful soft colors, dramatic swirls and natural veining. Marble is a popular choice for bathroom vanity tops, tub surrounds, floors, foyers, fireplace surrounds, walls and windowsills. Marble adds a sophisticated look to your home or business and should be cared for much like fine wood furniture.
